How to split your days between Madrid's art museums

The big museums sit in two clusters. On the Paseo del Prado you have the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen, under 10 minutes' walk apart. To the west, beside the cathedral, are the Royal Palace and the Gallery of the Royal Collections. Each of the major museums needs two hours or more, so give each one half a day.

Watch the calendar. The Reina Sofía closes on Tuesdays. The Thyssen opens on Mondays only from 12:00 to 16:00, and it's free during those hours. Many smaller state museums close on Mondays. The Royal Palace and the Gallery can close for official events.
