Free Monday or free Saturday: not the same deal

The two free slots cover different things, and they're easy to mix up. On Mondays from 12:00 to 16:00 you get the Permanent Collection. You don't need a ticket, and those four hours are the only time the museum opens that day.

On Saturdays from 21:00 to 23:00, the temporary exhibitions on the ground floor and floor -1 are free. The collection on floors 1 and 2 isn't part of it, so if you're going for Caravaggio or Hopper, Saturday night won't help. Entry is also limited by capacity.

Temporary exhibitions follow their own rules: some open free on Mondays and others close that day. Check the museum's website.

When to go and where to start

The museum names 14:00–16:00 as its quietest time. A normal ticket has no set time, except for the ground-floor exhibition, so you can walk in whenever suits you during the day. Allow about two and a half hours.

To follow the chronological order, the museum suggests starting on the second floor and working down by room number. What to see at the Thyssen lists the works with their rooms, and warns that several of the best known aren't on display as of 4 November 2026.

Same price on Tiqets: two products to choose from

Tiqets and GetYourGuide sell the basic ticket at the museum's price, so the decision comes down to what's included and the cancellation terms.

The museum's own ticket covers the collections and temporary exhibitions. Tiqets has two products. Temporary exhibition plus collection can't be cancelled. Permanent collection can, before the date of your visit. If your plans might change, take that one. If not, take the full one or buy on the official website.

The museum's audio guide adds €5.50 to the ticket price. For a guided tour or a meal at the museum, read each Tiqets product's conditions before paying.

Over-65s, pensioners and students should check the museum's €10 reduced ticket before buying elsewhere. Under-18s get in free. All the conditions are in Thyssen free entry.

Ticket office and last entry

The ticket office closes 30 minutes before the museum. In July and August the museum stays open until 21:00 from Tuesday to Friday. On Mondays there's nothing to buy: you just walk in.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Thyssen Museum free?

How much are Thyssen tickets?

€14 for the general ticket, which covers the Permanent Collection, the Carmen Thyssen Collection and whatever temporary exhibitions are on. The reduced ticket is €10.

Is the Thyssen open on Mondays?

Yes, from 12:00 to 16:00, with free entry and no ticket needed.

Do I need to book a time at the Thyssen?

Only for the ground-floor temporary exhibition, which has limited capacity. Otherwise your ticket is valid all day.

How long does the Thyssen take?

About two and a half hours, according to the museum, plus about 50 minutes for the ground-floor temporary exhibition.
