What you pay depends heavily on the type of museum. Public fine art and archaeology museums tend to be cheap, and private novelty museums cost a good deal more.

Contemporary art

At the Reina Sofía, the Guggenheim and MACBA, look at the programme before paying. In Valencia, the IVAM costs €5 and is free on Wednesdays 16:00–19:00 and on Sundays.

CosmoCaixa costs €8 and the Museu de les Ciències in Valencia €9.90. If your children get bored looking at display cases, start here.

History and archaeology

The Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid ended 2025 with 864,201 visitors, its record, and as a state museum it costs €3. It doesn't charge on Saturdays from 14:00, unless they're public holidays, or on Sunday mornings.

Illusions, wax and other curiosities

The Museum of Illusions costs from €16 and Madrid's Museo de Cera €19: more than the Prado at €15. Ikono is in the same vein.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in Madrid?

€7 general and €3.50 reduced. It's free on Tuesdays 15:00–17:00 and Sundays 18:30–20:00, except from 1 July to 14 September, with tickets from the website until capacity is reached.

Is the natural science museum in Barcelona free?

The Museu Blau costs €6 and doesn't charge on Sundays from 15:00. Under-16s get in free.

Which fine arts museums in Spain are free?

Those in Valencia and Asturias have free entry. Those in Seville and Granada cost €1.50 and are free for EU citizens. Bilbao's costs €12 and doesn't charge on Tuesdays, with part of it closed.

What interactive museums are there in Madrid?

The Museum of Illusions, from €16 depending on the date, and Ikono.
