Short visits, low prices

With young children, look for short visits. Sweet Space takes about 45–60 minutes.

The Railway Museum costs €4 per child aged 4 to 12, and Madrid's tourist board says it has musical theatre about trains, ticketed separately, on weekends and public holidays from October to May. The National Museum of Natural Sciences charges €3.50 for ages 4 to 18, and under-4s don't pay. The Museum of Illusions costs from €12 per child.

Free for them

The Naval Museum doesn't charge, though it closes for all of August and won't let you into the rooms with a backpack. The National Archaeological Museum is free for under-18s with proof. And if you only want to show them a few rooms of the Prado, they don't pay there either.

Where each place draws the line

The Banksy Museum is free up to age six; Sweet Space, up to three. Atlantis Aquarium and Faunia go by height: under 1 metre, no charge.
