August and backpacks

Two things can spoil your visit. The museum closes for all of August for maintenance. And you can't take backpacks, suitcases or large bags into the rooms: there's no bag storage, so travel light.

Guided tours of the permanent exhibition

They run on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30. The museum says individual visitors don't need to book: groups form from whoever's in the reception area at that time. But the same page adds that weekend tours are handled only through its web form, so Thursday is the simplest option.

Organised groups must apply at least 15 days ahead.

The map to look for

The piece to find is the chart by Juan de la Cosa, which the museum presents as the first map to show America. It makes a free add-on to a day at the Prado, on the same avenue.
