Check the calendar before you buy

This is an official residence of the Spanish head of state, with fixed closing days and others added for official events. Patrimonio Nacional posts those closures in the opening-hours section of its website. Look before you buy, then again the day before.

Free hours, but not for everyone

Free entry is for EU citizens, EU residents and EU work-permit holders, and for Ibero-American citizens. There are three limits:

It covers the self-guided visit only: a guide costs extra and the Royal Kitchen isn't included. 18 May and 12 October are open days for everyone, although the Royal Kitchen closes on those days.

Self-guided, guided or combined

The official self-guided visit costs €18 plus the booking fee, which works out cheaper than the Tiqets ticket. If you're going on your own, buy from Patrimonio Nacional's website. Over-65s, students up to 25 and ages 5 to 16 pay €9.

If you want a guide, look at the official website first: €26 with a palace guide, in Spanish every day of the week, with tours from 10:30. A reseller makes sense if you want a small group, want to add Almudena Cathedral or need to be able to cancel. Tiqets' guided tours can be cancelled before the time slot or date, depending on the product; its plain ticket can't.

The official combined ticket with the Gallery of the Royal Collections, right next door, costs €24. The Gallery part is valid for seven days before or after your palace visit.

If it's sold out

Try these in order: another day the same week on the official website, an official guided tour, which has its own time slots, then a reseller's guided tour, many of which include the ticket. The ticket office exists but is the least reliable option. If nothing works, the Jardines del Campo del Moro are free and the Gallery has its own capacity.

Changing of the guard

It's free and you watch it from outside. There's one on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:00 at the Puerta del Príncipe, and from 10:00 to 12:00 in July and August. The solemn ceremony is usually on the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00, in the Plaza de la Armería, entered through the Puerta de Santiago. Madrid's tourist board says it isn't held in January, August or September. Official events or bad weather cancel it.
