Masterpieces off the walls
As of 4 November 2026, the museum marks several of its masterpieces as not on display: Dürer's Jesus among the Doctors, Van Gogh's Les Vessenots in Auvers, El Greco's The Annunciation, Cranach's The Nymph of the Spring, Rubens's Venus and Cupid, Franz Marc's The Dream and Bacon's Portrait of George Dyer in a Mirror. The Dalí with the bee, whose title ends a Second Before Awakening, is listed in the temporary exhibition rooms.
Second floor: from Duccio to Rembrandt
This is where the museum's chronological route begins.
| Work | Artist | Room |
|---|---|---|
| Christ and the Samaritan Woman | Duccio | 1 |
| Portrait of Giovanna degli Albizzi Tornabuoni | Ghirlandaio | 5 |
| Portrait of Henry VIII of England | Holbein the Younger | 5 |
| Young Knight in a Landscape | Carpaccio | 7 |
| Saint Catherine of Alexandria | Caravaggio | 12 |
| The Grand Canal from San Vio, Venice | Canaletto | 17 |
| Family Group in a Landscape | Frans Hals | 23 |
| El columpio (The Swing) | Fragonard | 24 |
| Self-Portrait with a Cap and Two Chains | Rembrandt | 27 |
In Room 5, Giovanna's husband commissioned her portrait after her death, not long after they married. Look for the letter L embroidered on her clothes, his initial. In Room 12, Caravaggio dressed Saint Catherine in luxury and gave her the attributes of her martyrdom: the wheel with blades, the sword and the palm.
First floor: from Impressionism to Pop
| Work | Artist | Room |
|---|---|---|
| Swaying Dancer | Degas | 33 |
| Horsewoman, Front View | Manet | 33 |
| Fränzi in Front of a Carved Chair | Kirchner | 35 |
| Metropolis | George Grosz | 37 |
| Seated Man | Cézanne | 41 |
| Hotel Room | Hopper | 45 |
| Harlequin with a Mirror | Picasso | 45 |
| Woman in Bath | Lichtenstein | 52 |
Room 45 is a good place to pause. In Hotel Room, a young woman sits on the edge of the bed without unpacking her suitcase. Hopper doesn't tell you what happened before or what comes next, and that's what stays with you. In Degas's Swaying Dancer, the viewpoint is high and angled, as if you were watching from a side box.
Short on time
The museum estimates an hour and a half for a selection of works. Stick to Rooms 5, 12, 33 and 45. On a free Monday, 12:00 to 16:00, this selection fits comfortably. The conditions are in Thyssen free hours, and for any other day see Thyssen tickets.
