Buy before you reach the door

Patrimonio Nacional, which runs the site, requires you to have your ticket before you go in. There are two ways: the official website, or the ticket offices at the Visitor Reception Centre on Avenida de Don Juan de Borbón y Battenberg, opposite the north façade. If you buy there, you then have to walk round the building: individual visitors enter by the west façade, through the Patio de Reyes. The north façade is for groups, guided tours and people only visiting the museums.

The small print on free afternoons

On Wednesdays and Sundays from 15:00 entry is free, but not for everyone. It covers EU citizens, EU residents and EU work-permit holders, and Ibero-American citizens, and you have to prove it.

Watch the clock too: last entry is an hour and a quarter before closing. In winter that's 16:45, so you have under two hours to get in. If you'd like to take your time, the €14 morning visit pays off.

Before you pay, check if you qualify for free entry at any time. Large families, working teachers, unemployed people and people with a disability of 33% or more can, by showing their document at the ticket office. On 18 May and 12 October, everyone gets in free, whatever their nationality.

The two renovated museums

The Painting and Architecture Museums reopened on 2 October 2026. The first holds about a hundred works, with Titian, Tintoretto, Van der Weyden and Ribera. Both are included in the general ticket. Until 31 December 2026 you can also see them for free on their own, with a ticket from the Visitor Reception Centre.

Making sense of the monastery

Without some explanation, the monastery is hard to follow. The official audio guide adds €5, and the guided tour €8. Resellers offer the ticket with a digital guide or a guided tour, so choose by what's included and the terms for changes.

Patrimonio Nacional advises against bringing a backpack, and selfie sticks are banned.

The Casitas and the gardens

The Casita del Príncipe and Casita del Infante are separate, with their own rates, and open only on a few days. You can only see them with a guide. Outside the monastery, the gardens open Tuesday to Sunday: from October to March, 10:00 to 18:00.

From Madrid by bus, train or car

Buses 661 and 664 leave from the Moncloa transport hub, or take the Cercanías commuter line C-8. By car, take the A-6 and exit 29 towards the M-505.
