Altamira Museum tickets

You can visit the museum and the Neocueva. The original cave takes no new requests.

What you actually get to see

Be clear on this before you drive out: your ticket gets you into the Museo Nacional de Altamira, not the original cave.

The original cave has very tightly limited access, five people a week at most. Entry is by appointment, through a waiting list formed in 2002 and reactivated in 2020. The museum contacts people on it in order of their requests. The list is closed to new names, so that visit can't be bought.

The Neocueva is what you'll see: a rigorous three-dimensional reproduction, based on the study of prehistoric techniques and materials, with the polychrome ceiling and its bison, horses, deer and goats. It's part of the permanent exhibition.

Three ways in

Free at the ticket office. Saturdays from 14:00 and Sundays. These can't be obtained in advance, only at the museum's ticket office on the day.

Same day at the ticket office. Available tickets start going out at 9:30, first come, first served. On public holidays and in peak holiday periods, the museum advises coming early or buying ahead.

Online, at least a day ahead. Valid only for the stated day and time. You must arrive 15 minutes early, and there are no changes or refunds. If you're entitled to free entry, go to the ticket office with your document. General tickets don't need this.

Everyone needs a ticket, children included.

Hours and discounts

It opens Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30–18:00 from November to April and until 20:00 from May to October. Sundays and public holidays, 9:30–15:00. The ticket office closes half an hour earlier. It doesn't open on Mondays.

With a RENFE long-distance train ticket, shown within 48 hours of your journey, you pay 50% less. The museum recommends downloading its free app for the visit.

Reaching Santillana

By car, take the A-8, exit 234. Without one, Puente de San Miguel local train station is 6 km away, and there are Torrelavega–Santillana and Santander–Santillana buses. More plans in the Cantabria guide, with Cabárceno and El Capricho de Gaudí.
