Who has to buy the tourist ticket

Montserrat charges a tourist ticket for the atrium, basilica and Camarín. If you don't live in the EU, you buy it online for between €9 (basilica) and €23 (Visita Montserrat with the Throne, audiovisual and museum).

If you live in Catalonia, elsewhere in Spain or in the European Union, you don't pay it, as long as you're not in a group or on an organised trip. You do have to book on the Abbey's website, up to a month ahead, for Mass, the Escolanía choir or the Virgin.

Rack railway, cable car or package

The R5 line leaves Plaça Espanya every hour from 8:26 and connects with both.

If you don't pay the tourist ticket, these packages include something you already get free, so compare with buying transport alone.

Build the day around the Throne

The Throne closes from 10:30 to 12:00, and the Escolanía sings at 13:00 from Monday to Friday. To see both, either arrive before 10:00 or book the Throne for around 12:00. The museum opens 10:00–17:45. In the package with the Throne, the time you pick is the Throne's; everything else fits before or after.

Independently or on a tour

On your own you have more leeway, and you spend less if you don't pay the tourist ticket. An organised trip with pickup is worth it if you're with children or don't want to deal with connections, but always check whether it includes the Throne. If you're thinking of the Santa Cova, look up its funicular first: as of 4 November 2026 the operator listed it as out of service.

With a ticket to the Throne of the Virgin, 8:00–10:30 and 12:00–18:25. Residents book that visit on the Abbey's website.

Monday to Friday at 13:00, and on Sundays it takes part in the Conventual Mass. This can vary with the liturgical and school calendars, so check first.
